Best Mug Press for Mugs and Tumblers

For mugs, the simplest choice is the Cricut Mug Press: one button, no dials, for 11–16 oz straight-walled mugs. For 20–30 oz tumblers, choose a tumbler press such as the HTVRONT Auto Tumbler Press, or a combo with a tumbler attachment. Sawgrass lists ceramic mugs at 350–400°F for 150–300 seconds, so mug pressing takes minutes, not seconds.

Who each one suits

Specifications are each brand’s own. We have not tested or used these presses ourselves; notes draw on manuals, trade sources and published reviews.

Best for mugs#1

Cricut Mug Press

A one-button mug press. You wrap the mug, slide it in and press the button; Cricut sets the heat and time for you. It is built for Infusible Ink and Cricut mug blanks, and Cricut says generic sublimation mugs in the right size will likely work.

Why it stands out

  • One-touch operation: no temperature dial or pressure knob to get wrong (Cricut).
  • Fits straight-walled mugs of 11–16 oz and 82–86 mm diameter, per Cricut’s product page.
  • Low power draw: Cricut lists 500 W in North America.

  • You want to set your own temperature and time: there are no manual controls.
  • You are impatient: 9to5Toys timed about six minutes per mug.

Tips

Three things that make the difference

01

Lint-roll and tape

Cricut says lint can cause blue speckles, so lint-roll the mug, keep the design 0.5 inch from the handle and secure it with heat-resistant tape.

02

Use sublimation-ready blanks

Epson says drinkware needs a coating made specifically for dye-sublimation.

03

Allow for expansion

Heat Press Nation says stainless tumblers expand with heat and suggests lower pressure or preheating.

Honest note

The Cricut Mug Press has no temperature or time controls, which is great for simplicity and limiting if you want to experiment. It also takes only straight-walled mugs. 9to5Toys timed about six minutes per mug, so it suits gifts and small batches more than large orders.

FAQ

Questions people ask

What mugs work in the Cricut Mug Press?

Straight-walled mugs about 82–86 mm in diameter. Cricut’s product page says 11–16 oz; its help article says 10–16 oz and up to 4.72 inches tall. Generic sublimation mugs in that size will likely work but are not guaranteed.

Can a mug press do tumblers?

Not the Cricut Mug Press. Tumbler presses like HTVRONT’s take 10–30 oz straight tumblers, and combo presses often include 20 or 30 oz tumbler attachments.

How long does it take to sublimate a mug?

Several minutes. Sawgrass lists 150–300 seconds at 350–400°F for ceramic mugs, and a Geo Knight executive suggests starting at 400°F for about four and a half minutes.

Are sublimated mugs dishwasher safe?

Cricut describes Infusible Ink mug results as dishwasher-safe. For other blanks, follow the blank maker’s care instructions.

Do mug presses smell?

Cricut says to use its Mug Press in a well-ventilated area and that the odor fades with use but may not go away completely.

Can I use the Mug Press with sublimation ink?

Cricut designs it for Infusible Ink and its own mug blanks, and says sublimation-compatible mugs within its size specs will likely work.
